Thai Church Picnic American Style, by Sandy Michael

Angela Sudermann
I attend a church here in Thailand that is mostly Thai, but has a fair number of Westerners as well.  The service has translation provided in both languages.  Last Saturday a whole church outing was planned to include grilling hamburgers as well as Thai traditional foods.
That morning a couple of helpers and I made potato salad for 50 people, deviled eggs, ants-on-a -log, and mashed potatoes.  I f you are thinking mashed potatoes are unusual for a picnic, well they begged for them.  I was glad I had good help for peeling all of those potatoes!

In the afternoon we all played (in spite of the 100 plus degree heat). There was badminton, soccer, jump rope, hula hoop, croquet, as well as board games. It was held at a large roofed sala (shelter house) in the formal gardens of a nearby university.

No tables are required.  They just put the food onto large, woven rice mats on the marble floor of the sala.  Everyone then sits on other mats to eat.
