Day 20 BLOG

AleXandria

Ivan Martin Muñoz

Today we drove to Alexandria and it was a much shorter drive, thankfully nothing like the drive to Luxor.  We stopped at a rest stop to go to the bathroom and get sodas.  I saw some soccer balls there that I wanted to buy, but I thought it would be better if I wait. We got to 'Alex' which I found out is a nickname for Alexandria, and we stopped at some Greco/roman/Egyptian catacombs, the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, where mummies used to be buried. They said it was found by a donkey that fell in a hole and then they dug them out little by little I assume. It was real cool because they were underground so you has to walk like 2 stories or something down.  After that, we went to St Marks Anglican Church, which was really interesting! I learned that Egypt used to be ruled by Britain.  It is so humid and sticky here in Alexandria,  I think it’s because it’s so close to the Mediterranean Sea. We ate at a restaurant called Fish Market. They had HUGE shrimp which were super awesome! We also ate dinner at another restaurant where we ate koshari, which is the food I like the most from Egypt. I hope I can find the recipe when I get back home!  We also got ice cream from a small street side vendor for dessert.  I had strawberry, which was delicious!  We also spent time at the main harbor of Alexandria where the Citadel which is constructed from the remnants of the ancient Alexandrian lighthouse, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.
